Area Four in bite-sized form.
A4 Pizza
The design of A4 Pizza was very concept driven from the beginning with the goal of distinguishing itself from its sister restaurant, Area Four, while simultaneously embracing the eclectic Somerville neighborhood it would call home.
During pre-design, the concept for the space became that of a “pizza workshop”. This became the driving idea for the design as well as material selection and articulation. We built the bar top from OSB plywood, 2x4s, and 4×4 posts; just like you would build a workbench in your garage. The soffit above was custom-constructed out of standard Unistrut and basic 2×4, 2×6, and 2×8 lumber, featuring integrated lighting, plus functional storage for pizza boxes. In the end, not only was the A4 design economical in material costs, but it also served as a unique, local space for neighborhood residents to embrace as distinctly their own.
