The underground,
amplified.

Central on Air

Central Square has long nurtured the emerging music scenes. Blues, rock, and punk have deep roots there. Today, electronic music is thriving. Wanting to support that better, the city asked us to help create a non-profit streaming radio station for local talent along with a physical space.

We were thrilled to help and continue building the legacy of local music in the area. In designing the brand, we wanted to ensure the look and feel would attract local talent to play and intrigue listeners to tune in online. The clever yet simple emblem combines the look of a turntable and the letter ā€˜Cā€™ while giving a nod to longstanding public broadcasting brands. The wordmark echoes the rounded geometry of the icon while offering harder straight edges and slab shapes. Each letterform embodies a feeling of weightlessness, seeming to float mid-air. For color, we leaned into a deep red, used prominently at underground nightclubs and after-hours events. We pulled similar inspiration from the underground scene with the interior of the physical space. We kept it more make-shift, simple, and flexible, using raw materials to maximize the budget. The scaffolding shelving system gives it an intentionally unfinished look, leaving room for change and exploration as they learn from the musicians who use it. The lattice of beams and wood planks also offers endless options for mounting lighting and cameras for the streaming video feed. Check it out soon for yourself and support your local DJs.
