Preserving old character
while creating new.

Jamaica Plain Addition

Our clients for this project have a beautiful old house in Jamaica Plain with lots of classic touches. Overall, they wanted to keep that classic aesthetic but open up the compartmentalized kitchen and dining room to create one large, updated space for entertaining.

To start, we demoed an original built-in in the dining room. But have no fear, we were careful to salvage one of the gorgeous glass doors and repurpose it as a custom-built cabinet. It’s amazing. From there, we created a minimal addition to the back of the house while being extremely conscious of its size relative to the house. The result adds tons of workable space in the kitchen while keeping the backyard big and beautiful. Then, to create even more connectivity with the backyard, we designed large windows across the back of the kitchen and added a new deck. For finishing, our clients love the house's original style, so we carried its dark wood detailing and dark cabinetry throughout. Finally, we topped off the project by converting the old coat closet into a funky, new powder room that is classic yet can’t miss. Now our clients have a great, modern space for entertaining, plus the character that made them fall in love with their house in the first place.
