Rec Room
Starland has been the South Shore’s go-to spot for fun since 1968. It started as a driving range, mini golf, and bumper boat venue and later evolved into a larger amusement, sports, and arcade complex. But why should kids get most of the fun? Now, it’s the parents’ turn.
Rec Room is the newest addition to Starland. It’s a social game bar with games like Skee Ball, Pop-A-Shot, darts, shuffleboard, cornhole, foosball, and arcade games. Not to mention tons of drinks and tasty bar food. We had a blast working on all aspects of the experience, first naming it and then designing the brand, architecture, and interiors. The idea was to create a very active and analog concept where people could connect and reconnect. From the space to the games to the food — all of it is super social. With Starland being such a fixture in people’s memories, we took inspiration from its past for both branding and environmental elements. For the logo and identity, we pulled shapes from the original sign. For textures, details, and colors, we pulled from the old driving range structure. The Starland blue. The old steel I-beams. Even the Astroturf.
Then, we blew out the brand with an array of in-store elements, copywriting, apparel, and other fun concepts. We even created a crew of custom characters to bring the games to life in a super fun way. It’s all very playful and loaded with personality and meaning. Now, it’s not just a place where you kill time to wait for your kids. Now, it’s a full-fledged destination that you seek out and want to go to again and again. It’s modern yet nostalgic, industrial yet welcoming, playful yet polished, and childlike but grown-up. Gather your friends and bring your allowance. It’s game on at Rec Room.
