An escape in the woods.
Richmond Lodge
When we first worked on this forest getaway, it was a 1,200 sq ft cabin renovation. Almost ten years later, our client’s family has grown as well as their desire to call the woods home beyond only long weekends.
We helped them revisit the entire design with a 3,400 sq ft expansion and a range of new spaces. Overall, they wanted to maintain the original cabin’s structure and geometry, blend it seamlessly with the new, and create a clean and contemporary aesthetic throughout. Our final design takes inspiration from the classic dogtrot style-- where two structures become one via a shared roof-- and bridges the old with the new. The new lodge features five bedrooms, five and a half baths, a great room, a chef’s kitchen, two bars, a record & entertainment room, a three-season porch/dining room, a roof deck, two decks, a see-thru container pool, and a three-car garage. While it has certainly come a long way since its cabin beginnings, the house’s rustic spirit remains as well as its focused attention to the natural beauty surrounding it. It was an absolute pleasure to work with our great clients once again to create a restorative home that they can love for many, many seasons to come.
